Course Description:
Without a doubt, titanium dental implants have been considered the gold standard for tooth replacement since their introduction in the 1960’s, demonstrating excellent biocompatibility and offering a wide range of treatment options for patients. Nonetheless, reports on possible unwanted reactions to titanium have increased in recent years. Hypersensitivity and allergic reactions, corrosion, Ti particle release, and unfavorable esthetic results have been reported. In addition, the emerging trend of a holistic or
metal-free approach to dentistry has prompted patients and clinicians to seek an alternative to titanium and other metals. Zirconia implants have proven to be a reliable alternative to titanium as a means for tooth replacement both in vitro and in vivo. Zirconia has the same capacity for osseointegration as titanium, as well as the ability to withstand occlusal forces. Its low affinity to plaque accumulation and increased resistance to peri-implantitis provides a tissue-friendly environment that could very well be a game changer in Implant Dentistry, potentially replacing titanium implants in the future.
