This hands-on workshop emphasizes conservative posterior partial-coverage preparation designs for ceramic onlays, particularly lithium disilicate. Participants practice cusp coverage variations, proximal box design, appropriate ceramic thickness, margin placement, and refinement of weakened tooth structure.
Topics Covered:
1. Conservative partial-coverage onlay principles and design
2. Rotary instrument selection and sequential posterior preparation
3. Occlusal depth grooves, reduction, and ceramic thickness
4. Functional and nonfunctional cusp coverage variations
5. Proximal box design, contact clearance, and gingival floor configuration
6. Butt-joint margins, approximately 90-degree cavosurface angles, and avoidance of bevels
7. Margins on convex enamel surfaces rather than developmental grooves
8. Preparation modifications for undermined cusps, weakened ridges, and unsupported enamel
9. Rounded internal line angles, smooth transitions, and final preparation assessment
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate conservative posterior onlay preparation with appropriate occlusal reduction and proximal clearance.
2. Differentiate and perform selective cusp coverage and proximal extension variations.
3. Create butt-joint margins, rounded internal geometry, and appropriately positioned enamel margins.
4. Identify and modify weak tooth structure while preserving a conservative partial-coverage design.
