This indispensable chisel removes irregularities from crown preparations on the facial and lingual axial walls and the entire occlusal or incisal surface. The other less well-known use is during scaling and root planing – the instrument may be slipped easily under the gingiva to remove stubborn calculus from accessible areas. Featured here is the original G.V. Black 11-15-3 formula (11.0 mm long blade, 1.5 mm wide, and angled slightly 3º/100º on each end with the cutting edge sharpened to either push or pull depending on the situation.
